Thousands of Texans cast ballots on Monday, the first day of early voting, with many saying that immigration, abortion and the economy were driving their votes. Lines snaked outside several polling places across North Texas, including Oak Lawn Branch Library in Dallas and Carpenter Park Recreation Center in Plano.

Texas is among a majority of states that allow early voting or voting by mail. The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot in Texas is Oct. 25. Mail-in ballots must be returned or postmarked by Nov. 5, unless returned by an overseas voter.

The first day of early voting kicked off in North Texas with long lines at several polling locations. In Dallas County, more than 56,000 people voted, with some still in line as late as 8:00 p.m. Election volunteers have already reported glitches with a few polling sites and said they plan to investigate the problems further.
