Former U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, a two-term sheriff known for helping to hunt down a prolific serial killer, is trying to become Washington’s first GOP governor in 40 years.
PROSSER, Wash. – Sitting at home in Prosser two days after the August primary, Jerrod Sessler felt confident. His lead over Rep. Dan Newhouse, a fellow Republican who has represented central Washington’s 4th congressional district for a decade, was growing wider as more ballots were counted.
Two new polls show Democrat Bob Ferguson holding a steady lead over Republican Dave Reichert in the race for Washington’s next governor. The polls show Ferguson with roughly 50% of the statewide vote followed by Reichert with support from about 35%. The remaining 15% of people polled reportedly indicated they were undecided.

Reichert worked for 33 years at the King County Sheriff’s Office, including two terms as sheriff, and has been endorsed by dozens of sheriffs. He helped track down the Green River serial killer, Gary Ridgway, who killed 49 women and was arrested and convicted in 2003 during Reichert’s second term as sheriff.
States have adopted policies that allow for ballots to be cast by mail, at early voting sites or that maintain a preference for voting in person on Election Day.
Reichert, the former U.S. Representative and King County sheriff, fares best among voters who say crime or border security is their top concern. The candidates are effectively tied among self-described independent voters, with Ferguson at 38%, Reichert at 36% and 26% undecided.
