India and China have reached a deal on patrolling their disputed Himalayan frontier to resolve a four-year military stand-off, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Monday, paving the way to normalise political and business ties.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that India and China have reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) following recent negotiations between officials from both countries.

The announcement of the pact arrives just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia for the BRICS summit, where he may engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines.

China and India agreed to allow each others’ troops to patrol the disputed border between the two countries, a significant step toward ending a four-year stalemate as leaders from both nuclear-armed nations possibly meet at a BRICS summit this week.

India and China have agreed on patrolling arrangements to de-escalate tensions along their disputed Himalayan border, India’s top diplomat has said. Vikram Misri said on Monday that the two sides have agreed on “disengagement and resolution of issues in these [border] areas that had arisen in 2020”.
